Diagnosis and treatment for knee pain

Today, it is not just elderly who face knee pain but it is also found in younger people as well. The reasons can be over exertion, injury, ligament tear and so on. Arthritis can also be a cause but the pain is on or around the inner regions of the knee whereas non-arthritic pain is related to the knee cup. To get the right reason behind nagging knee pain, it is important to get a proper knee pain diagnosis.

Diagnosis of knee pain

Doctors use a variety of methods to find the reasons for pain in the knees. They check the patient’s history to study their lifestyle and if they have been doing strenuous exercises. Other means are tissue palpation, orthopaedic testing and anatomical location. Clinical presentation is also done to check the knee condition. Observational movement analysis is also a part of knee pain diagnosis.

Diagnostic ultra sonography is also effective in finding about the condition of tendons, ligaments, swelling in the joint, muscles, etc. If arthritic changes may be the reasons for relentless knee pain, then an X-ray can reveal the exact cause. MRI is also done in advanced cases.

Treatment for knee pain

Since knee pain can be due to different reasons and also of different types, the treatment of each can vary. The pain can be in the inner regions, the anterior areas or it can be chronic pain. Motor control training has been found to be very effective in not just treating injuries but also in rehabilitation, especially after a surgery.

Different treatment procedures such as ESWT or Extracorporeal shockwave therapy, CARE or computer assisted rehabilitative environment, Apos Therapy, Meniscal tear treatment, ACl treatment are some of the treatment methods done after knee pain diagnosis. Each type of treatment being different, is decided upon, after a proper evaluation of the condition and the individual.

Apos therapy is mainly used in osteoarthritis condition which enables realignment of strained knee so that the person can regain the normal gait. Usually, when a person has severe knee pain, his walking gait changes and if it is not addressed, he may forever walk in that manner which may strain the knee further. A special device which appears like shoes is used to correct the gait.

Meniscus tear is commonly seen in sportspersons and either surgical or non-surgical treatment options are advised by doctors. Non-surgical procedures involve rehabilitation with the help of computers, vibration therapy, ESWT, retraining and more. The complete procedure for treating meniscus tear is referred to as RICE or Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

Thus, depending on the type and cause for knee pain, your doctor may advise the right treatment option. The proper diagnosis is the key to proper treatment and hence do ensure that the center you go to is valid and has experienced doctors.

Surgery often is the last option when all other treatment options have failed. Hence, do check out all the non-operative measures first before to see if the knee pain could be alleviated.
